Overview
The Hot Wheels Ford Capri GR5 returns three years after its debut in Race Day series as part of Car Culture assortment in 2023. Just like this set, the Race Day release also featured a Ford Motorsport livery that is similar to this set. It might be a deliberate collector friendly design choice. The blue & white Fleet Flyer along with Ford Motorsport livery is compatible with both the 2023 Race Day Capri GR5 and this 2026 Team Transport version.
Hot Wheels debuted Fleet Flyer in the Car Culture Team Transport Series in 2018. Fleet Flyer bears resemblance to 1970s European commercial heavy trucks like the DAF F218 series. It is enclosed trailer and features a rear lift gate for loading the car inside the rear section of the truck.
Since 2018, Fleet Flyer had 13 variations in Team Transport series as of August 2026 and one in BMW M Series Collector Set. One more release is planned as part of famous ‘Rexy’ team transport set, number 97. In my opinion, Hot Wheels should not over do Fleet Flyer casting and should come up with new castings (real world not fantasy) for haulers.

Motorsport Heritage
Erich Zakowski and Ford’s Thomas Ammerschläger masterminded Ford Capri. The vehicle aimed specifically to dismantle Porsche’s dominance in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM). Consequently, Zakspeed shared only roof, pillars and silhouette above the wheel arches with its road going version to satisfy FIA regulations. Furthermore, the team constructed the chassis from 80 meters of aluminum tubing, resulting in a frame that weighed just 75 kilograms. To further slash weight, engineers utilized advanced Du Pont Kevlar 49 for body panels. Engineers also integrated silver wire cabling sourced from the aerospace industry.
Technically, the car showcased incredible versatility and innovation. Power initially came from a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine based on the Cosworth BDA. This engine allowed the ‘Wunderwagen’ to dominate DRM’s Division 2 with roughly 450 horsepower. By 1980, the team introduced a 1.7 liter twin turbo version for Division 1 that generated up to 650 horsepower. This engine enabled top speeds exceeding 180 mph. Additionally, the Capri pioneered ground effect technology in touring cars by employing full length underfloor venturi tunnels and flexible side skirts to generate massive aerodynamic suction.
This technical brilliance translated into historic track success. After Hans Heyer secured the model’s maiden victory at the Nürburgring in 1978, the Capri became an unstoppable force. Ultimately, in 1981 season, Klaus Ludwig secured the overall DRM title by winning 11 out of 13 races. Simultaneously, Manfred Winkelhock’s Division 1 ‘Liqui-Moly’ car snatched six more victories. This cemented the model’s reputation as the ultimate ‘Porsche Killer’ in DRM.
